Check our Register

Firms are put on our Register once we have given them permission to carry out a particular activity – this is known as being ‘authorised’. Firms that work as ‘agents’ for other firms are also on our Register and are known as ‘Appointed representatives’ or ‘Tied agents’. After that we monitor that they follow our set standards, known as being ‘regulated’.

Always make sure that the firm you use is on our Register before handing over your money. If they aren't regulated by us and things go wrong, you won't have access to complaints procedures and compensation schemes, for example the Financial Ombudsman Service and Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) – see Related links.

In this section we explain how to use our Register. Alternatively you can go straight to the Register.

Using the Register

You can search for a firm or individual and we explain here what you’ll find; common permissions/features to look out for; and what to think about when dealing with firms authorised in the UK or in the European Economic Area (EEA). You will also find explanations of some key words and phrases at Jargon made clear.

We can’t supply a list or recommend firms or individuals for you to do business with, but there are a number of organisations that can help you find advisers in your local area – see Related information. You should still check our Register to make sure that they’re regulated by us and what type of business they’re allowed to do.

To find out what to expect when dealing with an adviser, mortgage or insurance broker see Getting financial advice or order or download a printed copy from Publications. If you have any problems using our Register please Contact us.

Unauthorised and fraudulent activity

Beware of firms that are not on our Register but are offering financial services or products. Check our Lists of unauthorised firms and individuals that are currently targeting UK investors, as we update them continuously. Always check our Register and protect yourself by being aware of the latest Scams and swindles.
